‘Move Over PSY, K-pop’s getting cool’
If you’ve struggled to take South Korean music seriously so far (hello Gangnam style), get ready for Girls’ Generation…
When Psy and his flailing limbs first popped into our inboxes more than two months ago, we assumed it was a passing fad that would disappear the way of Fenton the dog. But as Lady Gaga’s record label, Interscope Records, signs up amazing new South Korean Band Girl’s Generation, it looks like the power of K-pop (Korean Pop) is here to stay. The nine-member girl band, all aged 21-23, are being hailed the new Pussycat Dolls, and have already sold 30 million singles in East Asia since they formed in 2007. The US is already taking notice of the girls’ electro-pop flavour music, and they’ve appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman.

So while Psy (real name Park Jae-Sang) was the first Korean artist to gain household-name status outside Asia - Gangnam Style’s now pushing 800 million views on youtube - it seems he certainly won’t be the last. Although it’s probably safe to say Girls’ Generation’s dance moves won’t feature so much of the ‘air horseriding’…
